Hayter had injured his leg badly in June of 1845, forcing him to remain in Venice to convalesce before returning to England. He had had designs to move to the continent around this period, and had put up his collection of Old Master paintings for sale at Christie's (1), however the injury seems to have put paid to this plan. (2)
