Rudolph Müller left his native Basel together with his friend Friedrich Horner when he was fifteen years old. Near Bern they met a family from England that supported their further education as painters in Paris. In 1822 they travelled to Naples where they worked for thriteen years. They were respected so much that they both received honourary citizenship. From 1838 onwards they lived in Rome. At the time of the Revolution of 1848 they ran out of work and were forced to return to Basel.

After a few years Müller returned to Rome, where he married and remained for much of the rest of his life. He was best known for his landscape paintings Naples and of Rome and the Campagna.
