ARCH ON THE VIA DELLE GALLIE, IN THE AOSTA VALLEY, DONNAS, ITALY

Bears titled & inscription verso

Gouache on paper

17.5 x 22.5cm

The present work shows the old Roman road to (then) Gaul, in Northern Italy. It is typical of the mid-19th century gouache paintings done largely for the International tourist trade throughout Italy and made famous by the artists of the Neapolitan School, who pioneered the style. Despite this it is nonetheless finely detailed and by an accomplished artist, where many such works were turned out with little skill and in large quantities.
