John Fisher was born in Coventry and educated at Camberwell School of Art, studying drawing under Euan Uglow. He worked first as an illustrator for IPC press, before going on to teach at Winchester and Farnham Schools of Art. He was Head of the Department of Illustration at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design.
Today Fisher works in a variety of media, including sculpture and printmaking, but is recognised most for his oil paintings on paper and canvas. He has travelled widely in Europe and Asia, painting views which appeal to his affinity for architecture and landscapes. His work has been exhibited at the Lincoln Centre in New York and the National Theatre.
Fisher has had eleven solo shows and exhibited frequently at the Francis Kyle Gallery on Maddox Street. Between 2002-2014 he painted five series on the theme of Writers' Rooms, spending long hours painting intimate views of famous authors' workspaces (including Daphne du Maurier, Tolstoy, Dickens and Chekhov among many others).
