This drawing is part of a group recently rediscovered by the Nonesuch Gallery, which are believed to be early works by Northcote after drawings in the collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds, to whom Northcote was apprenticed. A similar work to the present group can be found in the British Museum (2019,7015.426), which was acquired from Abbott & Holder (London). At present we have not yet discovered the source for the present work.

During Northcote's apprenticeship, one of his tasks was to bid on drawings for his teacher - who was one of the most prolific and accomplished collectors of Master drawings of his age. Today, Reynolds' distinctive collector's stamp can be found on some of the finest drawings in public collections around the world. It is likely that such an activity made a significant impression on the young Northcote: his own sale was held  by Messrs. Foster & Sons at their premises in Regent's Street, 4-5.07.1836 (Lugt 14421). One of the lots at this sale (Lot 103) included "105 drawings and sketches", and it is possible that the present group were among those.

There were more than 100 drawings attributed to Parmigianino in Sir Joshua Reynolds collection, with the second work in this pair similar in style to that of the Italian mannerist, who made numerous drawn studies of putti such as this.
