The present work can be dated to c.1904-8, as we know that the artist acquired the cat depicted in 1904, whilst living at 19 Boulevard Edgar Quinet, Paris, and named it after the address. The cat features in La Chambre sur le Cour, dated to c.1907-8 and now in the YCBA (B2014.5.3). Sadly, Edgar Quinet disappeared in 1908, never to return, providing a terminus ante quem for this series of studies.
