ATTRIBUTED TO GIOVANNI VOLPATO (1735-1803)
THE TOMB OF CAECILIA METELLA, ON THE VIA APPIA
Watercolour with pencil, heightened with touches of bodycolour
38.5 x 52 cm
Volpato produced another view of the Tomb of Caecilia Metella, located on the Via Appia beyond the walls of 18th century Rome and painted and drawn from various perspectives by dozens of artists over the centuries, which was sold at Ketterer Kunst, Munich, 04.06.2003, lot 109. The handling of the brush, particularly in the foliage and the additions of opaque bodycolour, on show in the present sheet is closely comparable to that in a drawing of the Pyramid of Cestius, Rome, which was sold at Christie's, Paris, 22.03.2023, lot 32.
