Knebel, of Swiss origins (born in La Sarraz), was the son of a landscape painter by the same name and was a nephew of Franz Kaisermann. He moved, with his father, to Rome when he was just a teenager, and he remained there for the rest of his career, painting numerous views of the city itself, the campagna and Tivoli, with the majority of his clientele being Grand Tourists.
