The present work is based on one of the most famous and repeated depictions of the Annunciation, the fresco thought to be by a monk called Bartolommeo (sometimes confused with Fra Bartolommeo) in Santissima Annunziata, Florence. Miniature paintings on vellum of this sort were extremely popular in late 17th and early 18th century Tuscany, and also in France where an independent school of miniaturists replicated paintings by earlier Masters. Perhaps the most important example of the Northern Italian school's treatment of this painting in this medium is the recently-rediscovered masterpiece by Caterina Angela Pierozzi (c.1670-1690), sold by Colnaghi to the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., in 2023.

That work is closely comparable to ours, with an ornate border around the figures of Mary and the Archangel Gabriel. Numerous artists were producing works such as these during the latter half of the 17th century, many of whom worked anonymously and a number of whom were female artists, and so precluded in some cases from practising professionally. The luminosity of tempera and gold leaf lends itself especially well to such decorative, devotional cabinet-pieces and the present work is an exceptionally well-preserved example.
