Augustus Lamplough was born in Manchester but studied at Chester School of Art. He lectured at Leeds School of Art after this. During this time his works comprise primarily architectural subjects, in particular cathedral interiors such as this, and views from his trips to Venice. From around 1902 his output became almost entirely views of North Africa, and it is these for which he is now best known as his output was prolific. He wrote several books on Egypt which he also illustrated, as well as providing illustrations to the author Pierre Loti.
 
Lamplough exhibited at the Fine Art Society, the RA and the Walker Gallery, Liverpool. He found particular favour with King Edward VII who selected a number of views of Egypt and Nubia which Lamplough submitted to the King at Buckingham Palace. His other Royal Patrons included the Queens of Greece and of Spain, Queen Alexandra, Princess Beatrice and the Khedive of Egypt.
